About Minguet Quartet
The Minguet Quartet – founded in 1988 – is today one of the most internationally sought-after string quartets and makes guest appearances in all the major concert halls of the world. Their passionate and intelligent interpretations ensure an inspiring listening experience – “because the joy of sound and expression, with which the ensemble brings the works, enlivens even the smallest detail” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung). The quartet’s namesake is Pablo Minguet, an 18th-century Spanish philosopher whose writings endeavoured to give the general public access to the fine arts: the Minguet Quartet feels more committed to this idea than ever.

Description
The Minguet Quartet concentrates equally on classical-romantic literature and modern music and is committed to numerous world premieres of compositions of the 21st century. Encounters with important composers of our time inspire the four musicians to constantly come up with new program ideas. The first complete recording of the string quartets by Wolfgang Rihm, Peter Ruzicka and Jörg Widmann are among the most important projects, continued by the sound documentation of the monumental 2nd string quartet by Manfred Trojahn and a portrait CD of the composer and OPUS KLASSIK 2023 prizewinner Konstantia Gourzi on the ECM label . A highlight of recent years was the performance of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Helicopter String Quartet as part of a concept by the conductor Kent Nagano.
The focus of the programming for the years 2023 to 2025 is the milestone birthdays of György Ligeti, Jörg Widmann, Anton Bruckner, Josef Suk, Arnold Schönberg, Luigi Nono, Luciano Berio, Toshio Hosokawa and Maurice Ravel. Please read the coming programme on their website; minguet.de
Previous seasons have taken the Minguet Quartet to the Cologne and Berlin Philharmonic, Library of Congress and International Gallery Washington DC, Konzerthaus Berlin, Wiener Konzerthaus, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, De Doelen Rotterdam, BOZAR Music Brussels, Théâtre des Abbesses Paris, Lincoln Center New York, SouthBank Center London and The University of Hong Kong, to the Festival d’Automne Paris, Grafenegg Festival, Beethoven Festival Bonn, Mozart Festival Würzburg, International Bruckner Festival Linz, Rheingau Music Festival, Tongyeong International Music Festival Korea, to the Festival Herrenchiemsee and Schwetzinger Festival.
Current partners of the Minguet Quartet include clarinetist Matthias Schorn, pianists Andrea Lucchesini and Danae Dörken, piano duo Yaara Tal & Andreas Groethuysen, violinist Franziska Hölscher, violist Matthias Buchholz, cellist Jens Peter Maintz and speaker Christian Brückner and Frank Arnold. As a solo quartet, the ensemble performed with the WDR Rundfunkchor, the DSO, SR, hr, WDR and ORF radio symphony orchestras, as well as the Bruckner Orchestra Linz and the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra under the conductors Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Markus Stenz, Peter Ruzicka and Ilan Volkov.
With the CD recording of the complete string quartet literature by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Josef Suk, Heinrich von Herzogenberg and Emil Nikolaus von Reznicek, the Minguet Quartet presents its great sound culture and opens the audience to the discovery of impressive music from the Romantic period. In 2022 the complete recording of the works for string quartet by Walter Braunfels and a CD with piano chamber music by Ferdinand Hiller was released, followed in 2023 by music by Heinrich Kaminski in combination with the unique string quartet by Glenn Gould. In the coming years, the Minguet Quartet will be presenting works by Alberto Evaristo Ginastera and the string quartet by Maurice Ravel on CD, among others.
In 2010 the Minguet Quartet was awarded the ECHO Klassik and in 2015 the renowned French Diapason d’Or of the Year, and in 2020 it received the RELOAD scholarship from the German Federal Cultural Foundation. The Minguet Quartet 2022 was selected as a relevant cultural medium to realize its EifelKlang project in cooperation with NEUSTART KULTUR – The Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media. The Kunststiftung NRW is a long-term and regular cooperation partner of the Minguet Quartet for numerous innovative projects in Germany and abroad.
